Motivation Is Not Your Problem
Motivation Is Not Your Problem: Why Healthy Habits Matter More Than Motivation After 40
If You're Waiting to Feel Motivated, You've Been Waiting for the Wrong Thing
Here’s something I wish more women understood:
Your biggest obstacle isn’t motivation.
In fact, after coaching women for more than 30 years, I'd argue that motivation has been unfairly blamed—and unfairly glorified.
Think about how many times you've told yourself:
"I just need to get motivated again."
Maybe to exercise.
Maybe to meal prep.
Maybe to lose the weight you've been carrying since perimenopause or menopause changed your body.
It sounds logical.
It also assumes that motivation is supposed to stick around.
It isn't.
Motivation Was Never Meant to Be Permanent
Picture this.
It's Sunday afternoon.
You buy healthy groceries.
You prep lunches.
You organize your calendar.
You're excited.
Monday goes well.
Tuesday isn't bad.
By Wednesday...
Work runs late.
Someone gets sick.
You didn't sleep well.
Dinner doesn't go according to plan.
Suddenly, that motivation has disappeared.
Here's what I want you to hear:
Nothing went wrong.
Motivation simply did what motivation has always done.
It showed up.
Then it left.
That's because motivation is a feeling.
And feelings are temporary.
The mistake isn't losing motivation.
The mistake is expecting it to stay.
Stop Negotiating With Yourself
One of the biggest drains on your mental energy isn't exercise.
It isn't meal prep.
It isn't getting enough protein.
It's the constant negotiation.
"Should I walk today?"
"Should I skip this workout?"
"Should I cook dinner or order takeout?"
"Should I track my food today?"
Every one of those decisions costs energy.
Healthy habits eliminate many of those negotiations.
That's why routines are so powerful.
Not because they're exciting.
Because they're efficient.
When something becomes part of your routine, you stop asking yourself whether you feel like doing it.
You simply do it.
Build Habits, Not Hope
I think we've accidentally taught ourselves to depend on motivation as if it's fuel.
It's not.
It's a spark.
A spark is great for getting something started.
It just isn't designed to keep the fire burning.
That's the job of habits.
One of my favorite examples is brushing your teeth.
Nobody wakes up every morning and asks,
"Do I feel motivated to brush my teeth today?"
Of course not.
You do it because it's become part of who you are.
Now imagine if eating enough protein...
Taking your evening walk...
Strength training...
Or planning tomorrow's lunch...
felt just as automatic.
That's where real freedom begins.
Not when you're more motivated.
When you have fewer things to negotiate with yourself about.
Learn to Like It Well Enough
Last week I introduced an idea I've been thinking about a lot.
You don't have to love everything your goals require.
You simply have to learn to like it well enough to keep showing up.
Notice what I didn't say.
I didn't say force yourself to suffer.
I didn't say choose a lifestyle you hate.
In fact, you've probably heard me say the opposite:
Don't build a life you can't wait to escape from.
But don't expect every healthy habit to entertain you either.
I don't love meal prep.
I don't wake up craving tuna packets.
I don't always feel like strength training.
What I love is what those habits make possible.
More energy.
More confidence.
More freedom.
Better health.
Sometimes appreciating the payoff is enough.
Health Is Built on Ordinary Tuesdays
One of my favorite mental pictures is this.
Imagine an ordinary Tuesday.
Not January 1st.
Not the first day of a challenge.
Not the week before vacation.
Just...
Tuesday.
Nothing exciting is happening.
Nobody is cheering you on.
Nobody is watching.
Do your healthy habits still exist?
Because that's where your future is being built.
Not during bursts of motivation.
During ordinary Tuesdays.
The women who succeed long-term aren't the women who stay motivated.
They're the women who keep showing up on ordinary Tuesdays.
The Question That Changes Everything
The next time your brain says,
"I don't feel like it."
Don't argue.
Don't shame yourself.
Don't wait for motivation.
Simply ask yourself one question:
Am I waiting for motivation...or am I waiting to begin?
Because more often than not...
Beginning is what creates the motivation you've been waiting for.
Not the other way around.
Ready to Stop Starting Over?
If you're tired of starting over every Monday, bouncing from one burst of motivation to the next, maybe it's time to stop looking for a better diet and start building a better strategy.
Because lasting weight loss isn't about becoming a different person.
It's about becoming the kind of person who keeps showing up—even on ordinary Tuesdays.
If you're tired of starting over, maybe it's time to start differently. Email me at [email protected], and let's build a strategy your future self won't want to quit.
And Before You Go...
Motivation gets you started. Habits get you home.
