Stop Choosing Diets You Can't Wait to Quit (If You Want to Keep the Weight Off)
Stop Choosing Diets You Can't Wait to Quit (If You Want to Keep the Weight Off)
Have you ever started a diet and, within a week or two, found yourself thinking,
"I can't wait until this is over." ??
If so, I want you to know something.
That thought may tell you more about your weight loss strategy than the number on the scale ever will.
Because here's what I've observed after more than 30 years of coaching women:
People don't usually regain weight because they lack willpower.
They regain weight because they built a plan they couldn't wait to escape.
That's a very different problem.
And it requires a very different solution.
Maintenance Doesn't Start After the Diet
One of the biggest mistakes I see is treating maintenance as if it's some magical phase that begins after you reach your goal weight.
It doesn't.
Maintenance starts on Day One.
The very first meal you eat...
The very first workout you complete...
The very first grocery trip...
You're already teaching yourself how you'll live after the weight comes off.
That's why I rarely ask clients,
"How fast do you want to lose the weight?"
Instead, I ask,
"Could you see yourself living this way a year from now?"
Because if the honest answer is no...
why would we expect the results to last?
Learn to Like It Well Enough
Here's a phrase I hope you'll remember.
You don't have to love everything your goals require.
You simply have to learn to like it well enough to keep showing up.
Notice I didn't say "settle."
And I certainly didn't say "suffer."
I'm talking about realistic expectations.
For example...
When I'm traveling or judging bodybuilding competitions, you'll often find tuna packets in my bag.
Do I love them?
No.
But I appreciate what they make possible.
They're portable.
High in protein.
Reliable.
They help me stay on track when my options are limited.
I didn't learn to crave tuna packets.
I learned to appreciate the freedom they give me.
That's a very different mindset.
The same thing applies to healthy habits.
Maybe you don't love meal prep.
Maybe tracking your protein isn't your favorite part of the day.
Maybe you don't jump out of bed excited for your morning walk.
That's okay.
The question isn't,
"Do I love this?"
The question is,
"Can I learn to like it well enough because I love what it gives me?"
That's the mindset that lasts.
Stop Looking for Perfect
I think too many women are looking for the perfect diet.
The perfect workout.
The perfect meal plan.
The perfect level of motivation.
Meanwhile, they're overlooking something much more important.
Repeatability.
Because the healthiest lifestyle in the world won't help you if you abandon it six weeks later.
A simpler plan you can repeat for years will almost always outperform the perfect plan you quit by Valentine's Day.
That's one of the reasons I tell clients that consistency is far more valuable than intensity.
Put Your Next Diet Through This Test
Before you start another challenge...
Before you eliminate another food group...
Before you download another meal plan...
Ask yourself one question.
Could I learn to like this well enough to still be doing it six months from now?
If the answer is no...
keep looking.
Because the body you keep requires skills.
Not just motivation.
One Challenge for This Week
Instead of overhauling your life on Monday morning, choose one habit you've been resisting.
Maybe it's eating more protein.
Maybe it's taking a walk after dinner.
Maybe it's getting to bed thirty minutes earlier.
Don't ask yourself whether you love it.
Ask yourself whether you could learn to like it well enough.
That one question may completely change the way you approach your health.
