Why You're Stuck Losing Weight After 40
Why You're Stuck Losing Weight After 40 (And It's Probably Not What You Think)
Here's an observation I've made after more than 30 years in nutrition and health coaching:
Most women are not stuck because they lack information.
They're stuck because they've become very good at negotiating with themselves.
They negotiate the walk.
They negotiate the workout.
They negotiate the meal prep.
They negotiate the bedtime.
They negotiate the protein.
And eventually, they negotiate themselves right out of the very habits that would move them forward.
What's fascinating is that many of these same women would never tolerate that behavior in other areas of their lives.
They show up for work.
They meet deadlines.
They keep commitments.
They solve problems.
They figure things out.
Yet when it comes to their health, they often give themselves a pass they wouldn't extend anywhere else.
That's not a character flaw.
But it is something worth examining.
Because at some point, progress stops being about what you know and starts becoming about the standards you're willing to uphold.
Not to mention…knowing what to do and doing what you know are two very different things.
After more than 30 years of coaching women through weight loss, menopause, fat loss, behavior change, and healthy aging, I've noticed something interesting:
The women who succeed are not always the smartest.
They're not always the most motivated.
And they're certainly not always the most knowledgeable.
They're usually the most honest.
Not with me.
With themselves.
The Question That Changes Everything
There's one question I wish more people would ask themselves:
Is this something I truly can't do—or is it something I won't do?
Read that again.
Because somewhere along the way, many people stopped distinguishing between those two things.
And the difference matters.
A lot.
Let's use an example.
I occasionally hear someone say they don't have time to exercise.
Maybe that's true.
But sometimes that same person spends 45 minutes every morning drinking coffee, scrolling social media, or watching the news.
Now before anyone gets defensive, this isn't about judgment.
It's about accuracy.
If time exists but we're choosing to spend it elsewhere, then the issue isn't a lack of time.
It's a matter of priorities.
That's not a "can't."
That's often a "won't."
And here's the good news:
You can change a "won't."
Some Barriers Are Real
I want to be careful here because there are absolutely situations where people face genuine barriers.
Physical limitations.
Financial challenges.
Caregiving responsibilities.
Medical conditions.
Trauma.
Disabilities.
Those are real.
This article is not suggesting that every obstacle can be overcome with a better attitude and a motivational quote.
Life is more complicated than that.
But what I see far more often are women confusing barriers with preferences.
And when everything becomes a barrier, we lose sight of where our choices still exist.
Choice is where empowerment lives.
The Most Common Places I See This Happen
Not with dramatic decisions.
With everyday ones.
"I can't get enough protein."
Did you buy protein-rich foods this week?
Did you build your meals around protein?
Or are you hoping protein somehow shows up on its own?
"I can't meal prep."
Do you need a four-hour Sunday meal prep session?
Or would cooking extra dinner solve half the problem?
"I can't get enough sleep."
Or does bedtime keep losing to one more episode, one more scroll, or one more thing on the to-do list?
Again, this isn't about blame.
It's about clarity.
Because clarity creates options.
The Moment Coaching Gets Interesting
One of the most powerful moments in coaching is when someone stops saying:
"I can't."
And starts saying:
"I don't want to."
Now that sounds harsh until you understand why it's so important.
Because the truth gives us something to work with.
If you tell me you can't do something, we're stuck.
If you tell me you don't want to do something, now we can have a productive conversation.
Why don't you want to?
What would make it easier?
What matters more?
What are the trade-offs?
That's where meaningful change begins.
A Challenge for You
Pick one area of your health right now.
Just one.
Not ten.
One.
Ask yourself:
Where have I been saying "I can't" when the more honest answer might be "I won't"?
You don't need to share it with anyone.
You don't need to post it on social media.
Just answer it honestly.
Because honest answers lead to better questions.
And better questions lead to better decisions.
Final Thoughts
The hard truth about why many people stay stuck has very little to do with information.
Most people already know what to do.
The challenge is becoming honest about what's standing in the way of actually doing it.
And the moment you stop hiding behind stories that no longer serve you, you create room for change.
Not because you're broken.
Not because you're lazy.
Not because you're failing.
But because you're finally addressing the real problem.
If you're tired of collecting information, starting over every Monday, and wondering why nothing seems to stick, I'd love to help.
I've spent more than three decades helping women bridge the gap between knowing and doing.
Because that's where lasting transformation actually happens.
