Why You Never Follow Through (And It's Probably Not Why You Think)

Why You Never Follow Through (And It's Probably Not Why You Think)

If you've ever found yourself saying...

"Why can't I just stick with it?"

You're not alone.

I've heard some version of that question for more than 30 years.

Women blame themselves for a lack of discipline.

They blame their hormones.

They blame their schedule.

They blame their age.

And while all of those things can influence your progress, they're rarely the real reason you keep starting over.

Here's what I've learned after coaching for over three decades:

Most people aren't failing because they don't know what to do. They're failing because they're getting stuck at one predictable point in the process—and they don't realize it.

So before you download another meal plan or promise yourself you'll "try harder" on Monday, let's figure out where you're actually getting stuck.

You probably don't need more motivation.

You need a better understanding of your roadblocks. Which type are you?

1. The Researcher

Some women become experts before they become beginners.

They've read the books.

Watched the documentaries.

Saved the recipes.

Compared every popular diet.

They're always learning, but they're rarely doing.

Learning feels productive, so it becomes a comfortable place to stay.

But there comes a point when another podcast won't change your life.

Taking a walk after dinner will.

At some point, learning becomes another way of delaying.

If you already know what to do, stop looking for the next answer and start practicing the ones you already have.

2. The Perfectionist

Perfectionists don't usually fail because they lack discipline.

They fail because they expect perfection.

One missed workout.

One restaurant meal.

One day they don't track their food.

Suddenly, the week feels ruined.

But here's the truth:

Consistency isn't built by never making mistakes. It's built by recovering from them quickly.

Healthy people aren't perfect.

They've simply learned that one imperfect choice doesn't deserve the power to derail an entire week.

3. The Motivation Addict

Motivation feels amazing.

Until it disappears.

If you've ever felt unstoppable on Monday and discouraged by Thursday, you've experienced the problem with relying on motivation.

Motivation is wonderful for getting started.

It's terrible at carrying you through an ordinary Tuesday when you're tired, stressed, and running behind.

That's where systems take over.

Because healthy habits were never supposed to depend on how you feel.

They were designed to survive even when you don't feel like it.

4. The Juggler

Life isn't slowing down.

Between work, family, appointments, errands, and responsibilities, most women are carrying more than enough.

The problem isn't that you're busy.

The problem is that healthy habits often require extra effort while unhealthy choices are effortless.

Remember this from one of my recent videos?

Convenience beats conviction more often than we'd like to admit.

If your walking shoes are buried in a closet, healthy snacks are hidden behind chips, and every workout requires an hour of planning, your environment is working against you.

Stop asking yourself how to become more disciplined.

Start asking how to make healthy choices easier tomorrow than they are today.

Start implementing strategy.

5. The Negotiator

This one is sneaky.

You don't skip your walk.

You negotiate your way out of it.

"I'll go tomorrow."

"I've earned this."

"I'll make up for it this weekend."

Sound familiar?

The more decisions you make in the moment, the more opportunities you give yourself to talk yourself out of them.

Successful habits remove unnecessary decisions.

Meals are planned.

Walks are scheduled.

Protein is already in the refrigerator.

Less negotiating.

More following through.

6. The Restarter

This woman has started dozens of times.

Monday.

The first of the month.

After vacation.

After New Year's.

After the kids go back to school.

She's excellent at beginning.

She just hasn't learned how to continue.

Life will always interrupt your routine.

Vacations happen.

Stress happens.

Holidays happen.

If every interruption sends you back to Day One, you'll spend years restarting instead of progressing.

You don't need another fresh start. You need your last restart.

7. The Visitor

This is the one that changes everything.

Visitors behave differently than residents.

A visitor says,

"I'm trying to eat healthy."

A resident says,

"This is how I eat."

A visitor says,

"I'm trying to exercise."

A resident says,

"Movement is part of my life."

Healthy living isn't somewhere successful women visit.

It's where they live.

That's the difference between chasing weight loss and building a lifestyle that naturally supports a healthy weight.

The goal isn't to stay on a diet forever.

The goal is to become someone who no longer needs one.

So...Which One Are You?

Here's the encouraging news.

You're probably not all seven.

You're probably one.

Maybe two.

And that's good news because it gives you clarity.

Instead of believing you need another meal plan or another burst of motivation, you can focus on the one place where your follow-through breaks down.

That's where real progress begins.

So I'd love to hear from you.

Which one describes you best? (You know I want to hear which one! Reach me at [email protected])

The Researcher.

The Perfectionist.

The Motivation Addict.

The Juggler.

The Negotiator.

The Restarter.

Or...

The Visitor.

Sometimes the biggest breakthrough doesn't come from learning something new.

It comes from finally seeing yourself clearly.
